Please do not post the same thing multiple times. The board software automatically flags certain posts as needing moderator attention. This happens the most often for new users. I'm pretty sure this is made clear at the time you attempt to post. Posting the same thing over and over again just makes that many more posts the moderators have to weed through later. This makes us sad. Don't make us sad. If your post/thread doesn't appear, just wait a while. Don't post it again. If it hasn't shown up by the next day, then you can try again. I normally go through posts in the mornings, and try to check a few times throughout the day, but I'm not here 24/7. There will typically be a significant delay before posts are approved. Just be patient.

What are the current benefits of releasing an update?

Hi

I am thinking of releasing an update for VideoFX+. Its not really a bug fix update, its more about adding new features.

Are there any Itunes benefits (i.e. rank increase, new release list ) that come with releasing an update? I know that you used to get a boost up the new release list.

Thanks

Oliver

Not really. You actually reset your reviews, which can hurt your sales and ranks right after updating.
If its good, new features, it should pay off later tho. Make sure it is very well tested for bugs and crashes, nothing worse than a rushed update that makes users angry.

PS: This should be on the Business, Legal & App Store forum.

other advantage is that you can tweak title and keywords - but I normally notice a 72hr "strange" period after an update with rankings & sales.

If you have high ratings overall this isn't as big a deal since it will show your total average until you hit 5 new reviews on the current version though. On updates for one of my apps it jumps from 5 star average for x number of reviews to 5 star average for a whole lot more reviews over lifetime (shows as 4.5 in some spots sometimes too so much be high 4 lifetime).

Similarly, if the current version had bad reviews but overall they are high you can temporarily bump up your rating since it'll use overall. If the new version is good you'll benefit from better reviews possibly as well.

At any rate, I'm all for adding extra features and updating as long as it isn't excessive and the new features actually add value to the app. In the long run, the more robust and stable you make the app the better it'll fare. Just make sure anything new is extremely well tested. It also makes it more difficult for competitors to keep up if you add new stuff before they do. We have an app that we actually saw a star taken away on a competitor review because someone saw a new feature we added and they wanted it added on the competing app.

I'm in the same boat as well. I have an app that's not a huge hit but generates a small amount of money each month. There's a laundry list of new features users have requested, but I don't have the motivation to update.

I'm currently using my time to create a whole new app, that when your trying to make money on the App Store seems like the way to go instead of constant updates.

There's an additional benefit to updating... it reminds people they have your app, which makes them more likely to use it again and tell other people about it.

That said, Apple is rumored to support automatic updating in iOS 6.

This is the biggest benefit basically you can re release your app to your users and remind them about it. It is a great way to get some word of mouth advertising.

I hope they don't implement auto updates without some kind of indication to the user about what's new and what not. If you saw the os6 store update new app icons will have a new banner on the icon when downloaded maybe updates will have an updated banner and a change log that shows up somewhere when u open.

If there is an autoupdate, it should give a notification once all of the updates are downloaded, saying which updates were downloaded.
