Please do not post the same thing multiple times. The board software automatically flags certain posts as needing moderator attention. This happens the most often for new users. I'm pretty sure this is made clear at the time you attempt to post. Posting the same thing over and over again just makes that many more posts the moderators have to weed through later. This makes us sad. Don't make us sad. If your post/thread doesn't appear, just wait a while. Don't post it again. If it hasn't shown up by the next day, then you can try again. I normally go through posts in the mornings, and try to check a few times throughout the day, but I'm not here 24/7. There will typically be a significant delay before posts are approved. Just be patient.
Has anyone tried making their app FREE for one day? Without using PAID services?
We have two non-game apps (diet apps) that we are looking to make FREE for one day. However, we are not interested in using paid services like "FREE APP A DAY" that charges thousands of dollars.
Does anyone have experience in making their app FREE for one day, and then switching it back to paid the next day?

Was there any lift in downloads?
Thanks!
From what I've heard here on the forums (try the search function), going from free back to paid doesn't help with sales that much. I think it depends on the application. If your application is the sort of app that once people use it, they will feel the urge to spread it quickly, making it free could have profound marketing effects.

I have done it a few times, sometimes for a few days at a time. In my experience there is quite a big increase in downloads for the period of the price drop. Its not a bad way a spreading the word about your app.
I've done this with my apps a few times but once earlier this month.
Here is how it looked: Tues Jun 5 - 5 paid downloads changed to free Wed. Jun 6 - 295 free downloads Thur Jun 7 - 969 free downloads Fri Jun 8 - (returned to paid mid morning) 188 free downloads Sat Jun 9th - 5 paid downloads.
and its been pretty consistent 5 or less every day since... it does put the dreams of dollar signs back in your head for those few days though...lol...
I've done this for all 3 of my apps, but here are the results for one of them (Holidays Plus). I didn't do any promotion except a tweet:
April 23(normal day): 9 paid April 24(to free): 260 free, 4 paid April 25(free): 7100 free April 26(to paid):968 free, 88 paid April 27(normal day): 17 paid April 28(normal day): 10 paid
So it does give you a small bump in sales afterwards, but it soon goes back to a more normal level. I did however see a small increase, like 10% in sales for the month after switching from free to paid and back again. Another positive effect was that my app recieved 30 positive reviews they days after the price change.

Even i have made my app free for a few days. Though i don't know if it would make any difference when i make it paid again, still, it feels great to see people downloading your apps from all corners of the world : )
Except for sharing it in this forum, Hackernews and tweeting about it, i haven't posted anywhere else. The good news is, some websites track the app store for such kind of changes and post them on their website/twitter.
Currently my app is #53 in top free productivity apps in Japan. Don't know how many downloads that would make.

We used media outreach services to broadcast our free app promotion for today. So far, we have received placements in:
Right now, Super Diet Genius is the #10 free app in the Health & Fitness Category.
In general, we find media out reach to be MUCH more cost effective than using an expensive paid service like Free App of the Day.
We are also pleased to see that Super Diet Genius is now beating well-established apps such as RunKeeper, Nike, and Weight Watchers, and WebMD. (see attached).

Congrats. It has moved up to #7 now.
After going through your attached links, it seems you got some really good coverage on websites which are related to your apps niche. I think this kind of promotion is much better as it directly targets users who are more likely to download and try your app.

Thanks! We are super excited that it is now #5, but more importantly, it broke into the Top 200 Free OVERALL.
I clearly won't advocate against media outreach but since the question was about making an app free without paying a service, I just wanted to say that it can clearly give some exposure and help getting (positive) reviews which can benefit your future sales.
Not paying a 24h free promo doesn't mean you can't talk about it, and maybe you can get one of the big blogs or blogs in your app field to post about it.
You can also try to do a free campaign with less known companies, including in other countries than the US. It can be less expensive, or even free.

We've done our own free-for-a-day a couple of times. I promote the sales on sites like Woot! Deals, Reddit, etc. and forums. We also get some real and useful feedback on those sites (not just the always positive feedback friends and family give).
Free for a day boosts our paid sales quite a bit for a couple of days after the free day (more than enough to make up for "lost" sales during the free day) but then the sales go back down to more or less our normal sales levels. It's hard to tell though with all the variables that affect sales. Our thought is that the more people we have with our apps the more passionate fans we can build. If even 1 in 500 people like our app enough to show friends, that's a win for us, but we're hoping for more.
I have done this before on a few of my apps. It seems like the downloads of the free go up, however when the price goes back as others noted the normal amount of sales returns.
A colleague of ours tried this recently and it had good results for him because the app got good reviews. I think you'll see an increase in downloads for sure but you've got to be confident the app will get reviewed and that the reviews will be good to make any long term benefits to the sales of your app.
