So I am almost done with my book the business side of iPhone apps.

Thanks to all of the devs on here that shared your stories with me. I am sending the book to my editor tomorrow. In the mean time I want to see what you guys think of the cover. It is still a work in progress so I am more so interested in how I can make it better.

    Thanks guys :)
Frankly, I don't like it. Fonts are really goofy, especially the title. Your avatar has much better design sense, so I don't think you're hopeless. Make it look more like that, IMO.

Yeah when I first had my designer come up with the cover I wanted something that looked fun. May have to tone that down a bit since the content is very serious.

I'm sorry, but if your designer made that, then you need a new designer.

Is your target audience developers who need help promoting their apps, or is this a book that will catch people's eyes and try to get them to get in on the app store 'gold rush'. I don't think we need any more of those.
Nothing is more awesome than sharks with lasers.

Download the #1 Free Laser App on the App Store.

The book is a quality book on how to do well in the business of apps. Not a crap gold rush scam book.

I have a new thread now. This cover art was thrown together pretty quickly. I had no issue writing great content for the book but the cover art is going to be tough. Unfortunately like apps the cover art can make or break a book

    Here is the new thread.

I don't like to be cruel, but... this book cover design is junk.. I'm sorry, but it looks like a two year olds finger painting. Not professional at all. Even if your book had great content I don't think you could expect good buy conversions.

Also do some research on headlines that sell or book titles that sell. There is some good info out there that can help you pick a book title that can be the difference between successful launch and failure. I am not saying your book title is bad, it might be great, but I urge you to go get real data and find out rather than just guess.

If you are serious about this book then honestly, why not just hold a blind gold status design contest on 99designs??? Is there a reason why you don't?

Pay a few hundred bucks and get 100 designs to pick from, give some feedback, get em to tweak it and pick a winner.

I've never heard on 99 designs but this sounds like a fantastic idea

Not a fan of the existing cover. It looks a bit homemade. The first thing that grabs me when buying a book is the cover, and a good one may get my dough without me even looking inside.

    Love the title!

EDIT: The book cover has grown on me since I wrote the above.

PS Just an idea and possibly a bad one but I would change

    "Secrets To Success
    In The App Store"

    to

    "Secrets To Success
    In
    The App Store"

Trivial I know but having "The App Store" on its own line would make it more sticky in my mind.

I really hope your book is actually just other developer stories on how to succeed.

Looking at your apps currently on the App Store I hope you're not telling the readers to use terrible tactics like the ones you seem to be using...just to name a few.

    • Putting apps in categories they don't really belong just to be ranked higher since the competition is less intense.
An image caption app and meme creator in Catalogs section? Hmm i'm pretty sure that's not where they belong.
• Taking really popular top apps and making clones, except with less features and just much worse overall quality of the app.
Draw Something -> Draw With Me

    • Snap Chop -> Caption Me (This one you even went as far as basically exactly copying his icon)

    • Now i'm not saying making clones of popular apps is a bad idea, if you're taking an already popular idea and making a much better app, fantastic! However if you're trying to ride off the coattails of top apps with a much shittier app, please don't bother.
• Cramming your titles with the apps you've copied titles.
Draw Something -> Draw With Me - Draw Something And Have Friends Guess It

    • Snap Chop -> Caption Me - Snap A Picture And Create Captions (You didn't have the word Chop so i'll give you this one)
• Lying in your description to trick users ( **** apple top ten ranked app **** )...you're app has hardly ever broke the top 1000. Or ( *** TOP 25 RANKED GAME WORLDWIDE *** ) I didn't know they had a worldwide game rank.
If someone has already taken the time to click on your app and think, hmm this looks good that little extra line of lie won't be what triggers them to buy. Ok maybe you'll get 10 downloads, sorry.
There are enough idiots already on the App Store releasing crap non stop, we don't need more people thinking they can get rich by doing things like this that don't even work. Hey if all those things i've mentioned were making you millions, damn! I would be doing them too! But there not and the App Store doesn't need more spam apps because someone thinks their 2 day to developer angry birds clone will make them millions.

All that to say if your book is just telling people to do these then please, please, don't release it.

    Sincerely,

Everyone not doing this on the App Store

Im going to just ignore your incredibly asinine comments. The Caption and Meme apps are apps we made for clients and are hosting them.

Draw With Me is a top 25 word game in most of the countries world wide.

The book is very helpful and has a lot of knowledge attained from years of development experience. Much of which came from this forum.

I asked for critique on my book's cover, not your advice on how I should run MY development company

Ok forget those 2 apps, the points for Draw With Me still go.

As for your description, Draw With Me FREE says and I quote "TOP 25 GAME WORLDWIDE"...true you are ranked in top 50 (you were prob top 25 for a while before) for a bunch of countries however in the WORD category only..not WORLDWIDE....that's kind of a huge difference.

Your paid version thought says (quoting again) "TOP 25 RANKED GAME WORLDWIDE"...which is a blatant lie, you're not ranked 25 in any country...not really ranked well at all, and again it's not WORLDWIDE it's in the WORD category only.

    Draw With Me Ranking

The other points are all still true.

If your book is useful and full of good information for new developers then I hope it does really well, especially if there are stories from all the good devs on this forum...we just don't need more books telling every person with a computer that they can get rich making bad apps.

To be fair his book is titled "secrets to success in the app store".

So if lying about being in the Top 25 or stretching the truth about being in the Top 25 is a secret to success then it is what it is whether you like it or not. Morals, integrity, ethics, or whatever you want to call it do not apply here. Whenever there is money to be made never underestimate what people will do to attain it.

You may not like the fact that developers of "Night Vision" or "Lockify" apps make tons of money by misleading and ripping off customers in their app description or screenshots. You may not like the fact that these same app developers pay people to submit fake reviews and fake 5 star ratings, but that doesn't change the fact that these are the secrets to success. They work and there is no denying that fact.

Also, do not forget that Apple has set the rules. They may say it's NOT ok to submit fake reviews and to mislead customers in their TOS, but they have not done much to stop it. I still see fingerprint scanner, night vision, lockify apps on the store. So what Apple says the rules ARE and what the rules ACTUALLY ARE are two very different things.

If you play by the "rule book" because you are a nice guy then all you are doing is giving an edge to the developers that are willing to play by the ACTUAL RULES. You may not like it, but that's the way it is in the business world. It's about making money and there is always someone waiting to slit your throat in a dark alley.

Does what I just said mean that I will stop at nothing to make money and that I am a without a soul or conscience? no, of course not, that is a personal choice for me to decide, but just because I do not like it or you do not like it does not mean that it is ineffective.

So lets give the guy a break about the secrets to success in his book. As long as they work then I feel like he should share those techniques whether they are black hat or white hat.

So professional looking which is exactly what my old cover lacked. I will post my top three in a few days

Have to say Im disappointed with people agreeing with this so readily on a developers forum.

Just because there ARE people 'waiting to slit your throat in a dark alley' doesn't mean you have to sell tips on where to find the best knives. You could always contribute to making the world a better place instead.

And just because apple aren't enforcing their rules as hard as they could RIGHT NOW doesn't mean they won't in the future. If this book consists of scam type tips that go against what Apple want the app store to be then Im dead against it, and so should you all be.

We know what apple want the spirit of the app store to be, because of whats in the rule book. You go against it, you might be lucky for a while but it will end soon enough.

This book should be about making a sustainable business... those without ethics get whats coming to them eventually, and in the longer term those businesses lose out. In this case Apple will get to you eventually.. their position is clear.. work with apple to give the customer a good experience and flourish, or try and rip them off and you should and will (eventually) fail.

All this hard reality of business talk is just bull, apple are doing pretty well at the moment yes? Are they scamming everyone or making products people love?

If scamming tricks is what the book is about I hope it fails, it deserves to.

The book is not about scamming at all. It is about legitimately marketing, promoting, advertising, and building quality apps that succeed.

I think everyone will be pleasantly surprised with the content.

If major companies are backing it the content must be decent.

Past history would suggest that you are wrong regarding going against the rule book will only work for a while. There are some of these apps that are breaking "the rules" that have been in the appstore since 2007 and are still going strong. Only the most blatent of the scam apps have been pulled. So I would disagree with this statement.

Really? One of the rules in the appstore was that there can't be keywords in the app title. What if one of the tips was to put keywords in your app title (assuming that the SEO algorithm hadn't recently changed)? Would you be dead against that tip being in there?

Of course you don't HAVE to resort to "scam" tactics to be successful, but that doesn't mean that "scam" tactics don't work.

FWIW I don't condone misrepresenting your app to customers by lying in app descriptions and screenshots. I really don't, but you have to admit it WORKS. I think it's important to be aware of it regardless of your moral or ethical standards.

Hey man I am glad you did other wise I would have been stuck with a sub par icon.

Idk where my book came off as a scam guide lol. It literally is a 150 page manual of how to make apps successful.

Are there things like putting keywords in titles to gain an advantage, sure. But there is also things like how to market apps for cheap.

How to get reviewed by the big companies.

How to interact with your users in a successful manner.

Selling and buying the rights to existing apps.

I think everyone will really enjoy the book. Maybe even learn a thing or two. I know I did and I wrote the damn thing. All of the developer stories and tips I got from here were just awesome!
