What dictates the Whats Hot Section

Hi

My app Video FX+ has just made the Whats Hot section of the UK Itunes market. Does anyone know what dictates how an app is set to be "Hot". Is it for example total daily downloads?

The Apple Reviewers choose which Apps are to be in the 'New & Noteworthy' and 'What's Hot' sections.
By the way, I've just had a quick look and your App doesn't seem to be there. Are you sure your App didn't get into a category What's Hot section? Most App's get a turn in there.

It's in the subcategory What's Hot. Unfortunately, if it's featured in this section, expect no upturn in sales whatsoever. Only visible on iTunes on the desktop (not on the device), and no-one looks there anyway.

Thats surprising, I know that I tend to use the desktop mainly to search for apps. It seems easier to do that compared to searching directly on the device.

Statistically, iirc upwards of 90% of purchases are made on the devices themselves. There was a thread somewhere a long time ago...

There was even a suggestion at one point that the subcat What's Hot lists were actually bot-controlled, as at one time there were 20 identical spam-apps in the Book subcat What's Hot all by the same developer.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Yeah I have gotten what's on for a category a few times and no increase in sales. I managed to get whats hot overall once and saw a huge spike. Like Mark C said if its not on the device's what's hot you're not going to see an increase.

Not a problem, I was just wondering how these sections generated there content. I haven't really noticed any big spike just a gradual increase of daily downloads.

I prefer to focus on getting ITunes reviews but trying to get users to review is quite difficult. Does anyone know of any sites where users can list their app for review in exchange for reviewing the other developers app?

I would shy away from those sites. Apple has gotten pretty strict about stuff like that. I would add a simple pop up / nag screen that asks users to review. I have done it in a few of my apps and noticed a good amount of daily reviews.

This changes in ios6 :). There is a section for what's hot and within that you can search by category. iOS6 app store is a lot like pc version.

It will be interesting to see what happens to sales do far as of beta 3 it looks as older apps will have a large advantage over newer apps
