Please do not post the same thing multiple times. The board software automatically flags certain posts as needing moderator attention. This happens the most often for new users. I'm pretty sure this is made clear at the time you attempt to post. Posting the same thing over and over again just makes that many more posts the moderators have to weed through later. This makes us sad. Don't make us sad. If your post/thread doesn't appear, just wait a while. Don't post it again. If it hasn't shown up by the next day, then you can try again. I normally go through posts in the mornings, and try to check a few times throughout the day, but I'm not here 24/7. There will typically be a significant delay before posts are approved. Just be patient.

How much (CPM) can you expect to earn on Ads ?

Hi everybody!

I'm new to this forum, very happy that I found it today!
It looks like a lot of nice people discussing interesting subjects, so I'm really glad to be a part of this now!

On to my first question(s) to you guys:

I represent a small company who plans to develop and launch a number of social and casual games in near future.

We plan (as others) to have a free, ad sponsored version of every game, as well as an upgrade to a free "ad free" version.
While doing our business calculations, we need information about the revenue potential in mobile advertising these days.

I hope that someone in this forum can help me with this important info:

1. What kind of CPM (price per 1000 impressions) can you expect in a mobile game, depending that you don't show the ads during gameplay, but between rounds? (full page ads)

2. I've heard that the developer keeps around 40% of the gross CPM, is this correct ?

3. How can you ensure that you get all the ad spaces filled up with ads, do you have any experience with ad controllers like "AdWhirl" from google ?

I'm looking forward to hearing from you guys, and promise to share my experiences after we do our launches as well!

Have a great day!

    Hi soloraid,

First of all, welcome to the forum!

I've had ads in my apps for almost a year now so i'll try to answer whatever I can to get you started. As for your CPM they can vary wildly depending on many things…if you search this section of the forum there's already lots of post regarding ad stuff.
In my apps (not games, and not full page ads, just ad banners) i've seen eCPM anywhere from 0.3 to 1.0$. Last few months it's been pretty steady around 0.6-0.7$.
It also depends on your CTR and the ad network. I've only used iAds and AdMob so far.

For full page ads, several ad networks have contacted me (when my app was near the top) with their usual "we think you can do great with us" spiel. I've replied to some and they told me I could see eCPM's of 0.5$ with normal banner ads and around 2.0$ with full page rich media ads.
It seems everyone gets different results so you almost have to try it for yourself and see.

I'm not sure about the 40% thing…whatever I see as my earning on the ad networks, I receive in payments.

Although i've never done it with full page ads so i'm not sure if it works the same as banner ads with them.

To get 100% fill rate you can and should probably use a mediation tool (unless you implement your own in your code). I have used AdWhirl for the past year, was simple enough to set up and easy to use their website. You just set up all the info on their website and can change the order/backfill rank whenever and you'll see results within 5-10 mins. AdWhirl has been great for me for the year only problem is their Report numbers seem to be way off from what I get if I add the results from the networks i'm using. Doesn't effect anything but just too bad that I can't see all impressions in one place.

There are other mediations as well like the new AdMob one, Mobclix, and i'm sure others I don't know of.
However since Google owns AdWhirl and AdMob and they seem to be pushing for the new AdMob mediation they probably won't be adding new features/supporting AdWhirl as much if at all anymore..that's also something to think of.

    Hi Esoteric!

Thank you very much for your reply and interesting answer.
I know from others that the actual eCPM can vary a lot, so I just need to figure out some low-mid-high case numbers to put in my business calculations.

The numbers you mention, are they gross or your actual earnings ?

Again, thx for taking the time to answer me!

If you're talking about my eCPM numbers then those are my actual earnings.

    Good summary esoteric.

We see 5 Factors control your CPMs:

    CTR
    Ad size
    User Geo
    App Genre / Category
    Platform

I've got a paper that helps break things down (and the 'why') shoot me a note and I'll get you a copy: adam(at)mobclix.com
