July HUGE Sales drop!

dhomesdhomes Posts: 64Registered Users
Ouch!

I've got 8 paid apps in the app store. This past week I've seen a huge sales drop ON ALL OF THEM at the same time of about 60%. All this within 1 to 3 days.

July - Sept last year was also my worst period, but taking into account I have 2 more paid apps (niche engineering) and they used to sell pretty decently since Dec & March when I launched them I'm just surprised (and scared!)

Would it be related to the search update? maybe Summer months pre-iPhone 5? If this keep like this I'd just quit altogether iPhone development (working heavily nowadays towards an Oracle Java Certification these days)

Ouch! I can't believe it, my apps are not games / entertainment / etc. These are for professional engineers.

Hopefully this gets fixed, I know that App doesn't care that much about their 30% cut from specific developers but they may about developers leaving for other platforms

the problem is that after 3 years developing for iphone it's come to give me an OK income so that I could life ~mostly~ out of it.

If it was simply the search update you would have noticed earlier than just July, surely. I've heard Summer is generally a bad time for app sales... can anyone confirm that?

that's why I'm not 100% sure about the update, it all started mid-last week and got REAL bad this week.

Something else i find curious, the WORST day last year was, July 9th, worst this year? same!

I'm suspecting some type of curse or voodoo. Do you know of anyone who would want to hurt you or your app sales?

Lol sorry. Yea I'd say it's the summer dip as well as the keyword update. Do a check on your keywords see where you are showing up on search results. Titles will no longer get you downloads it's all about keywords and total sales to find the top of the charts.

My sales have steadily dropped, yesterday being the worse day for me in the past 6 months.

    Hope we can pick up.

My sales are fairly low right now but that's typical for the summer months.

It also doesn't help that the iPhone 5 won't be available until late summer / early fall.

My main selling app went from 1st to 4th when search for its exact name (a single word), the three now on top are games. The iPad version is now 21st (no idea what it was before).

However, search with the noun + the two most common adjectives RELATED to my app each still come up as first

one of the apps has 4.5 stars (out of 90 ratings), the other 5 (out of 12 ratings)

Just try it if you may (remember they are niche apps for engineers):
try "Structural Steel" or "Steel Shapes" or "Steel Sections" and both (ipad and iphone) come up 1st

In addition to the already-discussed reasons which I fully feel and agree with, I have another personal hypothesis: when there is a delay in the iTunes connect reporting for the day, Apple cuts off the day's reporting at some arbitrary earlier point in time of the day to buy themselves additional time to review any discrepancies of sales reported versus # of transactions approved, or something like that.

This would result in lower than "normal" sales for the day, and compensated by higher than normal sales reported on the next day. Obviously it's just a wild hunch, but whenever I see the AMR delay message, I wonder what goes on behind the curtains, and this hypothesis at least makes some sense to me. Again, there is no real basis whatsoever to support this, it's just a hunch!:D

don't know about it but i doubt it, the delayed AMR reports (where I sell about 70% of my apps) have been showing up with some frequency AND I HAVEN'T SEEN such a severe

There may be something to that. I've also seen activated promo codes show up in the reports a day later than they should have.

For example, this past Friday around 7 PM PST I gave someone at the bar a promo code and I redeemed it for them on their phone. That redemption didn't show up until Sunday (Saturday's report).

That's a good guess I think. My sales for July 9th are also significantly lower than usual (in-apps). But the number of downloads/updates seems to be within normal.

This is why I don't get the whole "Summer=bad sales" thing. Surely people have a lot of free time in the Summer to spend on apps?

Unless they want to spend that time on stuff they normally can't the rest of the year?

In any case my apps are work related, I doubt all engineers get 3 months off vacations nowadays (college students would be a different story)

I think people try to get away from screens and do more social things in the summer. I agree that in some ways it seems counterintuitive, but my sales are weaker in the summer are many other devs say the same thing.

Mine dropped exactly on the day when vacation started in US for schoolars and students - since June 16th.

Drop was quite very significant - more than 25-30%.

Yet, in May'12 I has +100% growth in comparison to Dec'11 - it was growing with constant rate all six months since Jan'12.

    More than 30%.
    Many many thousands of USD.

I saw close to the same grow rate Dec11 - May 2012, June flat/ a bit down, but JULY!

    Are your apps Games?

I'm down 90% yesterday. I worked my *** off on an amazing update which is to be released in the next couple days, but apparently it is a waste because no one can find my app due to the new search engine.

    I give up.

NO clue about what is going on, but now today I'm up 565% from yesterday (although yesterday was a good 80 to 90% down from the days before it)

My apps' ranking haven't been that much affect, maybe a few places here and there but nothing that bad really, they still show among the top. So I still think it has less to do with the search algorithm and more with the summer months + pre-iphone 5 (in my case at least)
