Please do not post the same thing multiple times. The board software automatically flags certain posts as needing moderator attention. This happens the most often for new users. I'm pretty sure this is made clear at the time you attempt to post. Posting the same thing over and over again just makes that many more posts the moderators have to weed through later. This makes us sad. Don't make us sad. If your post/thread doesn't appear, just wait a while. Don't post it again. If it hasn't shown up by the next day, then you can try again. I normally go through posts in the mornings, and try to check a few times throughout the day, but I'm not here 24/7. There will typically be a significant delay before posts are approved. Just be patient.
I don't get it, the other week you were applying for a mortgage as an app developer? But you're not making much money?
explain please.
I quit my job prematurely that time. Now I am back working full time and doing app dev as part time. I have lots of savings from my previous job. I thought I could make it selling apps full time, but it was a mistake since App Store is very tough nowadays.
I used to earn about 3k $ per month. Now, merely 400. It is really not sustainable, this apps business.

Hm, my app sales have been remarkably consistent for many months, ticking upward. i understand that the apps business can have ups and downs. But, how did you end up going from 3k to 400? Either you had to pull a lot of the apps, or you're doing something wrong?
So you're making "good side income" yet decided to make a thread complaining about how you make "soo little"?
400$ is so little for me because I quit my job to do this full time. On 400$ p/m, I can't survive, let alone to feed my family. Lucky I got a day job now. 400$ is definitely a good side income. But that's all there is.
RoryHarvey, i guess you are a teenage kid, surely 400$ can support your life lavishly. Grownups people get married, have kids, support their parents, you know?
FYI, most of my apps are free + ads. All apps are polished, but simple, so there is no chance to offer any 'real' IAPs.

I think that's your problem right there. Having a handful of ad-supported apps means you're going to see very, very unreliable income from them.
But I do have to say, some of these posts are confusing. From "how can I apply for a mortgage" to starting a thread that says "good thing I didn't quit my day job" to then "I did quit my day job, but my income dropped so I found another day job". Just sayin' :)

IMO you need at least 6 months steady (or rising) income before you're really in a suitable position to say 'right, I'm quitting'; the App Store, and your income off it, is too variable/unpredictable month on month (especially at the start) to be saying 'yay I'm gonna be rich', after one month of $3k. Sorry to say it, but there's more than enough advice on here (as an archive) to know that you really shouldn't have quit so soon.

Far from it, and I make a lot more than $400, but even if I did I wouldn't be complaining about it. I don't think people should feel entitled to quit their job and support their family from app purchases. $400 is a lot more than most people make on the app store, those who "make it" and go fulltime indie are actually a significant minority.
hey i give you credit for taking the plunge and giving it a try. I always admire people who are willing to go bust doing something they love. And going bust is not all that bad, anyways. happens to everyone at some point in their lives... and usually 2 or 3 times.
But your story is good information for other people considering the same options.

I totally agree with this, quitting a job without already showing some success for your effort is just a dumb move. Sure it's not as glamorous as quitting and working fulltime on your apps, and requires losing almost all your recreation time, but who said it was going to be easy?
You need to sacrifice to succeed, but don't need to sacrifice your financial future to do so.
Mmm ... 10 apps earning "only" 400$ ... did you ever think that the problem is maybe not the appstore but your apps ?
Why does everyone think that I am complaining about the App Store? I'm posting this to share with the rest of devs. Of course, the reason I am not making more is because of my limited creativity/coding (ie my products).
@MarkC, @ Monstertaco, I agree it was a dumb move, but I love programming apps. When you're in love, you do dumb things. What can I say. But I have confidence that I can get a new job should I fail to make enough money from apps business, that is also another reason why I quit.
@7twenty7, you are right. Free apps are not good to rely on. But I don't see any other way in the long run, since everybody is racing towards free.
