App displays differently in Simulator than is laid out in xcode

I'm just getting started with learning how to use xcode. I have a consistent issue across my projects where the app as laid out in MainStoryboard.storyboard is smooshed upwards in the Simulator. I think it has something to do with the new 4" display but I honestly have no idea.

Can anyone tell me why this is or how to correct it?

I'm running Xcode Version 4.5 (4G182).

Check what the dimensions of the view are. If greater than 480 tall, then you're sized for the new phone. If you are specifically referencing the bottom text field, looks like you have it pinned to the bottom. So when the view shrinks to fit the smaller screen, it is being shoved upward. Depending on what your goal is, you should probably pin it to the top instead.

Thanks for your response. I found the "size for retina 3.5" function as well, which solves a problem. Also, I now know you have to turn off 'Autolayout' to pin and unpin.

When developing for iPhone, is it better to use the new 4" canvas? Does the 3.5" display have black bars on the new 4" screen to keep the aspect ratio?

Smaller stuff is going to have to grow, larger stuff is going to have to shrink. I can't really answer what is better to use for you. Depends on what your app needs to do. Legacy apps are letterboxed on the new phone.
