Please do not post the same thing multiple times. The board software automatically flags certain posts as needing moderator attention. This happens the most often for new users. I'm pretty sure this is made clear at the time you attempt to post. Posting the same thing over and over again just makes that many more posts the moderators have to weed through later. This makes us sad. Don't make us sad. If your post/thread doesn't appear, just wait a while. Don't post it again. If it hasn't shown up by the next day, then you can try again. I normally go through posts in the mornings, and try to check a few times throughout the day, but I'm not here 24/7. There will typically be a significant delay before posts are approved. Just be patient.
does anyone know the maximum video resolution the iphone and ipad can handle? i know i have read in the apple documentation it is h264 640x360, and there is no listed max for mpeg4, but i have put in bigger videos and it kinda works.
in my texting the maximum i have found the ipad to display is 1080p (1920x1080). any bigger and the audio plays but no picture plays.
is there a reason apple says the max is 640x360 even though it will actually play up to 1080?
my app is randomly crashing while playing these 1080p videos, and im wondering if that is the cause? the videocontroller frame is 1920x1080, and just goes off the screen, its in a scrollview, and when scrolling slowly back and forth while playing thats when it crashes. the part of the video is is initially offscreen, is actually behind another image, and while moving the scrollview you can see the video flashing through the image, and when you stop moving the scrollview the video disappears behind the image as it should. im wondering if the video is too big for the device to handle, thats why its not giving any crash info when it crashes, as its not a fault with my code as such..
The HIG says to load the size you need into memory. Example: Don't load a 1920x1080 video when the screen is only 1024 x 768. It doesn't really make sense to put a video into a scrollview and have the user scroll around to see various parts of the video.
If you are looking for a quality developer, I'm your man. Give me a PM if you are interested.

the thing is i actually do need the 1080p video. and in my specific application it makes perfect sense to only show a part of the 1080p video on screen at a time. i have my reasons ;) if it is infact a limitation that the ipad cannot display 1080p video, then i will just have to scale down what i am doing and use a video of say 1500 width instead of 1920. the app works great on an ipad 2, but sometimes crashes on the ipad 1

any info would be great thanks!
This is just a guess, but I don't think it matters how small the viewable display is.
If you're loading a 1920x1080 video, then somewhere (offscreen), a 1920x1080 bitmap needs to be created.
This page lists the maximum texture size for various models. They have different GPUs: Loading
OpenGL ES 2.0 on the PowerVR SGX - The maximum 2D or cube map texture size is 2048 x 2048. This is also the maximum renderbuffer size and viewport size.
OpenGL ES 1.1 on the PowerVR MBX - The maximum 2D texture size is 1024 x 1024. This is also the maximum renderbuffer size and viewport size.
If the limit is 1024x1024, then creating a 1920x1080 bitmap will likely fail and crash the app.

ahh thank you very much! i think thats the answer.. i will test it, but im guessing the maximum isnt 1080p video (1920x1080), the max is then probably 2048x2048. i was just thinking 1080p becuause i tried to load a video that was 2500 pixels wide, and the audio played but there was no video. i then resized my video to 1920 pixels wide and it worked, at the time thinking there must have been a 1080p video limit, but looks like the real answer is the 2048 limit, just above 1080p video.
