Please do not post the same thing multiple times. The board software automatically flags certain posts as needing moderator attention. This happens the most often for new users. I'm pretty sure this is made clear at the time you attempt to post. Posting the same thing over and over again just makes that many more posts the moderators have to weed through later. This makes us sad. Don't make us sad. If your post/thread doesn't appear, just wait a while. Don't post it again. If it hasn't shown up by the next day, then you can try again. I normally go through posts in the mornings, and try to check a few times throughout the day, but I'm not here 24/7. There will typically be a significant delay before posts are approved. Just be patient.
Hey, all. I wanted to ask this simple question because this is what I do now (independent composer), but I don't mean to turn this into an ad for my services or anything.
I just really want to know... well, basically, if there's a place I SHOULD be putting my 'ad.' Where do you as a developer get your music or sound effects? Do you hire someone for freelance, or for maybe a percentage of sale profits? Or do you just go out and buy the most basic Casio keyboard from Walmart and wing it?? (Thats a joke... ;) )
Ill throw in a shameless plug here - I have a substantial professional music background and the knowledge, skills, and equipment to get some music made. If youre interested I am available for hire...send me a PM so we can talk further.
How much do musicians usually charge? A ballpark figure.
I'd be curious to know what others charge too...
I've only done music for short films, websites, and books at this point so I don't know if there's different pricing models for games. I think where it could get tricky is that games have potential for a lot of very small sounds/chimes in addition to any background music that might be going. I know what I would charge for a song, but I could see it getting tricky with lots of small clips.
Either way, I try to be reasonable (and competitive) in pricing so I'd definitely be open to some negotiating via PM as well...
...was that shameless?? I figured maybe being the OP entitles me to a plug or two... maybe... ;)

For my first game I search around for royalty free music clips. They are available, but not much. However with the latest game update I removed all music altogether and just put effects in it. Some of it I record it by myself and edited it using Audacity (free sound editor). Depending on game, I think you could do without a music at all.
For my second game (in the making now), I plan to learn GarageBand and create a music by myself.... Anyway, just sharing.

Logic Express is also a good tool, and both GB and LE share various expansion upgrades. I've had good success with LE for both foley & background music in various vids.
Those apps and some old-timey sheet music (I'm partial to Irish folk) and you're ready to go!
I make my own music for my games... but I know it's really really bad. I would like to hire a guy as well.. but most musicians I know.. (I only know one) are dickheads.
There are some audio tracks available on Audio Jungle, but the license agreements are different, but I think some of them can be used on games. Checks: Yes, there are some that can be used on games

I'm preparing my first game for the App Store at the moment and spent a good couple of hours looking around http://audiojungle.net as suggested by zardon. It's worth a look, you'll need an 'Extended License' to use it in a paid game.
Looking at the music and sound libraries is overall good and cheap solution but it takes hours of listening to find something appropriate for your game. Numerous times developers came to us with temp sounds (they spent hours serching for) and stil not satsfied. So it depends on what you want and on budget but, if you care about your game (as you all most likely do), try and find some young composer/sound designer looking for credits, or offer fair profit share. There are a lot young musicians out there. It will save your time and, most likely, it will result in better sounding game. | Concerning composer or sound designer rates, there is no such thing in gaming :) Everyting depends on project scale, timeframe, platform and budget.
