Please do not post the same thing multiple times. The board software automatically flags certain posts as needing moderator attention. This happens the most often for new users. I'm pretty sure this is made clear at the time you attempt to post. Posting the same thing over and over again just makes that many more posts the moderators have to weed through later. This makes us sad. Don't make us sad. If your post/thread doesn't appear, just wait a while. Don't post it again. If it hasn't shown up by the next day, then you can try again. I normally go through posts in the mornings, and try to check a few times throughout the day, but I'm not here 24/7. There will typically be a significant delay before posts are approved. Just be patient.

I've never heard of them. When we researched promotions, we focused on PR agencies who specialized in PR and media pushes. We came across Apalon, DCI Infoway, and Appular that you may want to checkout. In the end, we ended up going with EAM - Essential App Marketing.

Thanks for the tip. The thing is I'm sure not many of us can afford to spend thousands of dollars on PR, that's why I was interested to know about a more modest solution like the link I provided. We are used to thinking that paying more gives us more, but it's not always necessarily true.

I have experience with this company. I dunno what to say. Please do your own end from my experience.
I payed them for the cheapest package. The communication was good, but only from start. Than it was a bit harder. They answering few days later or week later.. e.g. they told me that they will answer on my email afternoon and after more than week and after my 3 email why they are not answering as promissed finaly I got email.
Tomorrow is 4th week after my campaign start thru them. By their statistics my press release was read 75,308 times.. but day by day I still have 0 sales, maybe 1 sale every 2-3 day. So, as I wrote, please, do your own end from my experience.

Hey Martin
I'm really sorry to hear that. We also had a similar mishap with our PR guy. He offered us an "amazing" deal, that really sounded wonderful on paper. We payed him half in advance, and from start off it felt like we might have done a mistake with him. On launch day, he went on a BBQ with his family , so we had to do the launch ourselves (sending the PR to bloggers and reviewers etc. and covered his *** for the most crucial day). He told me on the phone not to worry, it's only one day, the app store grace period is for 3 days so why do I worry. had he told me in advance he plans a BBQ on the launch day, we would have postponed it, but he neglected to mention it. The day after, he told my partner on the phone that we shouldn't be disappointed if the app won't succeed, since it's only our first app. Even if he's right (and I'm positive he's not, you CAN succeed with your first app) I'm sure that's not the best thing your PR guy needs to tell you on your 2nd launch day. Anyway, after a few more days that we saw he is doing literally nothing to promote our game, we decided to let him go. We haven't payed him the second half of course. Anyway the biggest damage he's done is not the loss of money that we payed him for 0 work, it's the damage he has done to us by leaving us alone "against" the app store without any marketing.
The lesson to be learned - only go with PR agencies you heard good things about. It's just too much to risk otherwise.

My name's Rob and I am the founder of appshout! I stumbled across this thread and wanted to take some time to reply with further info and also to make myself available should you have any specific questions.
Firstly, it's worth clarifying that we are a marketing service, not a service that uses bots to generates downloads, therefore the aim of every campaign is to distribute the communication about your app to as many people as possible, with a view to getting the app on as many websites as possible.
This has various benefits, the main ones being: - Increased exposure for your app - Improved SEO rankings for your App Store page / website etc. - Featuring on websites with high traffic will drive large numbers of users to your App Store page - When users search for your app on the main search engines (Google, Bing, Yahoo etc.) lots of information, video demo, screenshots etc. appear - giving your app credibility. - Improved brand value for multiple apps
We offer 3 package types:
NOISE This is the cheapest package we offer that is essentially PR distribution to a targeted distribution list based on the content of your application, as well as submission to 75 App Review sites.
LOUD This package includes PR distribution and some mobile advertising and video demo creation and distribution to generate some initial sales.
PLUS+ This is our premium package that includes everything from the Loud package, as well distribution on Associated Press feed and larger advertising campaign to generate higher levels of initial sales.
Martin, I have taken a look at your campaign and am very sorry to learn that you are disappointed with the result. However, I thought it might be useful to share the following with you;
1) You purchased our Noise campaign, which is our cheapest package focussed purely on getting your communication "out there". Completing a Google search for your Press Release (see Google) shows over 15,000 results, which gives immense credibility for any users searching for your application and is precisely the kind of result that any marketing service would hope to achieve.
It's also worth noting that App Review sites can take a while to feature an application, sometimes we are notified that a review has gone live 4 months after we contacted the website.
2) Regarding email communication; we always respond to emails related to active campaigns within hours (often instantly), however, sometimes enquiries outside of a campaign can take a little longer to reply to.
Sincere apologies for any inconvenience caused due any delay in our response. This is a difficult situation for us as we could hire extra staff to deal with enquiries outside of a campaign period - however we want to offer our packages as economically as possible and extra staff would probably add 20%-30% to our package costs.
In your case there was a lot of research we needed to complete to answer your questions and also documentation to generate, hence there was a small delay in order to complete this, while still keeping our package costs low.
3) You selected to distribute your own Press Release, which is something we want to offer at it can save costs for individual developers, however it's vital that the PR contains key phrases and information to lure in media contacts who might glance at 1,000s of releases per day.
With our in-house PR writing we always ensure at least 2-3 of of our team download and actually use the application before pooling our ideas, key points and suggestions for the communication focus. It's nearly always the case that our in-house PR gets much better results, but also we don't want to remove the option for users to submit their own PR as in many cases developers prefer to do this to save costs.
In summary, our Noise package is great to get your communication out there, and even in a worse case scenario a few hundred bucks to get your PR on 15,000 websites seems to work well for a lot of developers. However, to get noticeably higher downloads straight-away from using only our campaigns you really need to go for our LOUD or PLUS+ package, as to achieve this does unfortunately require a certain level of overheads.
Finally, we've had many clients whose sales have responded favourably to our campaigns. If you would like more info regarding this please visit: Case studies | appshout!
Anyway, I hope that helps to answer some of your questions, if I can provide any further information then don't hesitate to drop me a reply in this thread.
BTW, in addition to questions on our current service, are there any specific services you would like us to offer?
We are relaunching our services within the next few months to also include an entry level package ($75-$100) that will host a Press Release in a newsroom our website (linked to Google News etc.), distribute it to 5,000 of our preferred media contacts and submit your app to 75 App Review sites.
We will also have an App Directory of all our customers applications and invite journalists to visit us whenever they are looking for categorised and clarified content for their publications.
If there's anything else you'd like us to offer then let me know, we may be able to offer it during our relaunch.
I am trying Noise for our new app FEELPRESS right now. Appshout is writing the release for me. Let's see how it goes. I will share the experience as much as I can. One thing I can tell you is that there was no entry level package. :)
Good luck Comdai! Please do report back, hopefully with success stories

There should be a place where developers can reference for successes and failures of campaigns with various providers.. I would make it, but it would seem biased!
The big problem that I see is making it objective and not filled exclusively with people who have had bad experiences ranting.

@chrismaddern: I don't see why you think there is a problem. Why would devs with good experience not post there? The only thing to make sure, is to closely moderate it so no one will try to 'game' it (PR people disguising themselves as devs etc).
All in all, that's a great idea that empowers the community.

Also, it would important that every second post is not a PR person defending a criticism in the previous post about their service or promoting their service in general.
I see it going a little something like this...

@chrismaddern: that would be a good idea, although as others I do see that it could just become useless due to fake testimonials. but there has to be a way to prevent that.
@rob (app shout): I'm in no position to judge your services as I haven't tried them and results also depend strongly on the app. As I told Baruch (Find A Way José app), it's a shame that his launch campaign didn't go well as his app is very well done, designed and he got a lot of things right (despite that it's his first).
That said, I disagree with you on the "getting as many eyeballs on it as you can". A press release duplicated everywhere or mass emailed has few chances of doing anything good. Or at least that's not what I would want for my app: I want to pitch influencers and blogs that are going to be interested by my app, and avoid duplicate content that won't really help me with SEO (not now, and not in the future given the direction that takes Google). Having an app featured on a crappy review site helps nothing neither (not saying that's what you do, just stating a fact).
About the email communications, if I may: how you work is understandable, but that's something your customers should know about from the beginning. It would maybe avoid the kind of testimony Martin did.
Note: Apptamin does not offer marketing services, so I'm not trying to gain customers here.
@Yoshkow - I just spat Zico coconut water in to my keyboard. Thanks... off to the Apple Store! It's sticky now!
As for the current debate, I won't chime in on specifics but at a high level, the way I see it is that there are good approaches to PR and bad ones. There are also good fits and bad fits. I'm not sure what this is an example of. It is true that you get (roughly) what you pay for though - AppLaunch is ~$100 and so we're not very likely to get you in the NYT! (Although did get one App on to a Discovery channel show..?!) It sounds like AppShout ran a campaign and it just didn't go as well as Martin was hoping - these things happen. We once had a campaign that only got 1 legitimate review (obviously releases got copied everywhere in the world - but it's not of much value) - we did however insist on refunding them.
Unless you are a writer, I would strongly recommend at least having somebody else take a look at your release before you distribute it... a release is not a miracle, it just gets what you wrote in front of a lot of people. They're perfectly entitled not to care.
Any volunteers to make a PR Service comparison portal...? :p

@chrismaddern Glad you enjoyed? it...I had fun exaggerating while writing it.
I think you should start up the comparison portal. The only way it would "seem biased" is if you could somehow remove (if) any negative comments about your own service. Otherwise, it shows confidence in what you're "selling".
Try Tap for Tap - the cross-promotion exchange and monetization platform for mobile app developers.
10 days have passed after the release. The result? Simply search "Feelpress" and you will know. (Exclude this one because I directly contacted the media http://www.techinasia.com/feelpress-ios-japan/)
Every thing else in English. Appshout did for me.
The good part: -They do the "pain in the neck" job for you. * PRweb, PRmac and other medias. they do it for you as you can see from the search result.
The bad part: -They wrote the press release for me, but no one logged in. * I sent them a draft, and I was in a hurry, so that could be the reason.
-I had a hard time communicating with them via email. Due dates were not defined for each action so I have to ask them when things will get done. * My English is poor, so that could be the reason.
So if you are busy, you can pay them to do things for you. If you have time, and want to save money, I think you can get close to what they do by your self. But to get a story written, you need to build a good relationship with the media by your self or use a PR agency, not a press release distributor, with a worth writing app.
Good luck! :)

Good luck! :)

Sounds too good to be true.
