Please do not post the same thing multiple times. The board software automatically flags certain posts as needing moderator attention. This happens the most often for new users. I'm pretty sure this is made clear at the time you attempt to post. Posting the same thing over and over again just makes that many more posts the moderators have to weed through later. This makes us sad. Don't make us sad. If your post/thread doesn't appear, just wait a while. Don't post it again. If it hasn't shown up by the next day, then you can try again. I normally go through posts in the mornings, and try to check a few times throughout the day, but I'm not here 24/7. There will typically be a significant delay before posts are approved. Just be patient.

Thats awesome! Congratulations! Can you expand a bit on the media outreach services you used? I feel that being featured in mainstream media is the only chance us indies have at breaking the charts which it seems you've cracked the code! What services did you use? How much did it cost? Would you do it again (dumb question maybe)?

I don't remember it off the top of my head but we had 20k downloads in 1 day on iPad for "AR Album", the app was priced at $9.99 before the switch to free.

Next day, guess what, we had _3_ paid downloads at $0.99 :)

I don't remember at all if we've been in any top charts while free...

Thanks! We supplemented the Press Release from PRMac with a pitch letter sent out using Essential App Marketing 's media out reach. Super Diet Genius is an app created by EAM, so it didn't cost anything :) but outside clients pay over $3,000 depending on the scope of the services being provided.

It looks like your app generate revenue solely from its sales - there are no In-App purchases, there is no free version with ads. Probably this monetization model works for apps in your category. But it looks like it used to work for games.

By the way, making a paid app free for a limited period of time doesn't seem to make sence. It didn't work for me. Your rank top 125 in the free category won't remain when you move back to paid. These are two different App Store segments. If you have $9.99 app and make it $0.99 for a while - it works. You are still in the paid segment. You make it $9.99 again the next day but you will stay in the top XXX (what you achieved during the promotion) for a while. But if you make it free it's different. You just move back to top "999999" and that's it. Though it helps you with grossing category which seems to be mixed.

It seems like the only reason of doing that is viral marketing. Someone who buy you app today will probably recommend it to a friend tomorrow (when you app will be paid again). But such viral propagation is low.I don't usually want to buy something today foir $3.99 which a friend of mine got for free yesterday. Moreover if a friend of mine is fat and I'm skinny - this won't work either :)
Crazy Teapots is an entertaining 3D Deathmatch Game where players are teapots and missiles are fruits. Play against computer-controlled players (bots) or your friends on one of the provided game maps and enjoy the fun! :)

Our apps' PAID downloads increased 600% the day after it came off of FREE. So that obviously more than paid for the lost revenue.

More importantly, as you mentioned, the app was placed in the hands of 17,000 people (it was downloaded more times than LinkedIn, CNN, IMDB, Chase, and Bank of America, for that day) - which hopefully will tell their friends if they like it enough.

I had solid sales (99ct - 50peaces a day), went to free -> 50k DLs on day (place 2 german appstore freeapps). Went back to paid after 1 day -> constant sales about 200 / day over 1 month.

1st thing -> The app only targets germans (its kinda a geoquiz)
2nd thing -> It has an multiplayer. My theory is, that a guy who's buying the app (dl'ed it free), wants to play against his friend which has to buy it after the free promotion time. [This fact is extremly important to get an impact to the sales after the free period]
3rd thing -> No paid ad service - I just came up in some app-free-tickers

I tried this with a game without multiplayer -> no impact after free period.

What is the app all about and what promotional methods did you use? I mean i am clear about the fat that you will surely have an amazing app, but I do want to know what promotional methods were implemented to get such a high boost in the sales?

I don't know whether you asking me or the thread owner. I can tell you that I excessively write to review blogs. In germany there is a big one "appgefahren.de" - If they write about your app, you'll get very high visibility. You can write to the AppTicker (german app) team a mail too, for getting featured in their app (its only free if your app is good enought).

The other thing I do is guerilla metatagging. That means I tag my apps with names of upcoming big events which are related with the content of my app, because the people seems like to think "Oh I see there a great thing in reallife - lets have a look whether there is an app for that (or an app that is kinda equal)". I dont wan't to tell you which tags that are exactly, but I can tell you that these events boosts me to #1 - #5 in my category on the the days this events takes place.

Congrats on the large number of downloads. Be warned when you convert back to paid you'll drop back to the bottom of the search algorithm ranking. I wish this wasn't the case :/

honestly im not sure what you are talking about sir. You mentioned this app is "created" by EAM so they promote this app for free? So you are basically the owner of this app (super diet genius) but a publishing company like EAM created it for you? Then what's the benefit for them?

also do you use other marketing techniques beside doing press release?

I think EAM and SuperDietGenius are the same people/person. Personally, I don't see a problem with EAM pitching their service and SDG pitching their success with EAM. SDG has admitted their affiliation with EAM above. In my opinion, I propose that anyone who decides to use EAM's service should demand that they put the same effort, attention, and resources into his/her own app as they did with SDG. It sounds like an effective (albeit expensive) service for a developer who can afford it.
