Twitter for your app’s promotion

Even today, after being such a big player in Social Media for a number of years, Twitter is a kind of a mystery when it comes to how can you actually put it in use for your app promotion. Part of the problem it’s not about you, it’s rather about Twitter’s own struggle to figure out how exactly it may be helpful for businesses. Chances are you are aware of the Google’s AdWords and Facebook have to offer in terms of generating installs for your app but unfortunately to this day Twitter hasn’t launched a similar solution. But please don’t throw Twitter out of your marketing toolbox.

At this point there is only one key component is missing, which is app install tracking mechanism but given the level of competition between Facebook and Twitter my gut feeling tells me it’s on the Twitter drawing board at the moment. Meanwhile here is what Twitter can provide you now, basically there are two roads you can go or even combine both.

#1 On the app’s development cycle early stage, pretty much when you’re thinking about its name make sure you’ve registered a Twitter account for it. Once all graphics for an app are ready it’s time to customize your account and give it compelling, easy to grasp description. Note: you’ll need to place a link to the app on the App Store once it’s available and better use Bitly to shorten it and being able to track traffic from it later. Go with Twitter Self service to promote your app, here you’ll be able either promote the account itself and attract followers or promote your app in tweets and drive traffic directly on the App Store / Google Play / basically any store you develop apps for.

#2 Find, get in touch and plan marketing campaigns with Twitter account owners those accounts dedicated to iOS / Android apps. Just use Twitter built-in search tool to reach them out, it’s kind of googling but on Twitter, you’ll figure it out.

That self service add thing doesn't work.
It must be reviewed by Twitter staff and if you are not a big company, you will most probably be declined.

Yes, right now it does lead to the contact form and requires Twitter staff review, most likely it still goes through tuning.

I tried that a few times without success.

    We did pass :-)

Great news - Twitter for Business self-service platform has gone out from invitation-only
    advertising.twitter.com/2013/04/Twitter-Ads-now-generally-available-for-US-users.html

If it still implies approving process let me know :-) cause my understanding that it doesn't have to be this way anymore.

    It's here - Twitter Ads Self-service

Well, my suggestion #1 even in a situation like this don't be seduced by offers to get tons of followers for a few dollars -those are fake Twitter accounts and hence you'll get a number but not real people to talk to.

    1. Try to apply to Promoted Accoutns here - https://business.twitter.com/products/promoted-accounts-self-service
    2. Find relevant to your app hashtags (#) and join those conversations
    3. Include your app's Twitter account into your app's description on the App Store
    4. Put Follow button https://twitter.com/about/resources/buttons on your app's website.

I do agree that building your followship on Twitter is tricky - it's the information ocean and hence to be able to gain your followers you need:

    1. Strategy
    2. Time
    3. Patience
    4. And $ to take advantage of the Promoted Tweets / Promoted Accounts solution.

Well, Clear got its publicity after publications on TechCrunch. Btw, there is such tool as http://fakers.statuspeople.com, it helps you to evaluate the percentage of fake accounts among the real ones, but take it with a grant of salt - cause it does not provide an accurate numbers, only an approximation.

Check out the great interview with Dick Costolo, the CEO of Twitter. You just can’t get any better update about what Twitter is about now, where it’s heading and get a clue for yourself about what might you do wrong about the way you’re using it. And btw Dicks’ sense of humor is just out of chart - you’ll love it! :-)

    allthingsd.com/20130529/twitter-ceo-dick-costolo-the-full-d11-interview-video/

My outcome of it is that even though Twitter has changed significantly it’s still about sharing information real time and hence when you’re planning your app promotion on Twitter take into account:

    - Day and time you’re sending a tweet and a time zone of a country you’re targeting your message
    - Current popular tags that are relevant to your app
    - People are skipping through many tweets and so make sure they can get your point right away
    - Add call to action to your tweet
