I wanted to throw my two cents in on this service as I was another one of the developers who took him up on this deal.

The app I used zxcvbad's services for is a College Football schedule app. The reason I used him is I released my app way too early, well before College Football was on anyone's radar, so after a quick shot up from initial launch, it got buried.

I also need to offer a caveat about the sports section: it blows. Seriously. You can make top 10 with like 50-60 sales in a day. So getting me ranked high shouldn't have been TOO hard, if his service actually did land what he promised.

Well it certainly worked. I peaked at 3rd overall in sports and stayed in the top 10 for a couple of weeks. I'm still doing around 30 downloads a day and I certainly made my money back.

What people need to understand though, is what has been said here and in a number of other threads: visibility can help, but only if your app has staying power. And I certainly don't think zxcvbad's position that he will get you there...but it's up to you to maintain is an unreasonable one.

Would I recommend this service to another? Maybe. Depends on the category they were in and the app. If you're in a category where a couple hundred (or even a hundred) sales could bring you off the mat into visibility, and your app is good (not in the way EVERYONE thinks their own app is good...but actually good), then I say go for it.

For reference here's the app I used his services for:

Yes but isn't it a truth that being in the top 50-100 really does not mean as much as it used to in the early days of the store?
Let me put this another way. If you can provide info on the number of people who have paid for this service and have been able to pay their investment off entirely in newly generated sales, I will be a believer.

I'm afraid it won't pay off.

"Buying" your way into the charts does not work if your product it's not extremely good.

We've been just these days top50/100 in US photography chart, revenue was around $70 a day for 3 days. That's $210 from organic sales.
Now if I paid you $299 to get me there, I'd loose $80. Infact I would loose much more cos once we've been on top 50/100 traction started to fade, yesterday we made just $20 from the top100 tailing. So I'd probably loose $279 with your offer.

We got to the top50/100 after being on some blogs and of course in the new releases section. As soon as they faded off, we faded off the charts.

So charts positions won't be retained automatically if you are in the top50/100. It would be just a miracle if you get around 10% of your investment back from organic sales. (Means loosing 90%).

Top10 it's much better for organic sales, but then again, you won't be able to sustain that.

Think about it, if it was so profitable to "buy" your way into the charts everyone would do it. As every form of advertisement or promotion, if you haven't got a massive budget, it won't pay off.

And think about this, if if was that easy to retain a top50/100 position in the charts, the charts would hardly move/change.

There's no easy way around, you need a good product and a lot of people to talk about it.

Apologies for the bluntness of my earlier post. I just think that if you perhaps gave some idea of the techniques which you employ rather than just claiming through some mystery way you will be able to help indie devs achieve visibility I would be able to be able to look into it more.

Obviously you would have to do this in a way not compromising any USP your company has but I don't think you will find many people willing to throw money at something completely unconceptualised so far.

As I said, the numbers of copies you would need to buy to break into the top50/100 is quite low. You can easily buy your way in, but, again, that won't give you any organic value.

Ask a bunch of your friends with a few credit cards if they want to join the "scheme" and you can achieve the same results. (And that's much less than $299 or $499)

Note that the OP stated that the offer was only valid for $0.99 apps only, cos otherwise their margin in buying copies would vanish.

Honestly your post looks like one of those spam emails one would find in his hotmail spambox..they are not very credible and get deleted immediately.

Unless you come with some proof that you're method is working and explain at least shallowly on how you plan to achieve what you're claiming, I'll be very surprised if anyone is willing to jump on this.

As has been noted, getting in the top 100 of a category doesn't take that much, and really gives no value at all. There are no extra sales gained from being in that position in a category.

Now, given enough downloads, you can move up in the search results, but that requires you to be in a niche that people are searching for.

I was speaking about "strategies" and "action" tops where you need much more than 15 downloads to break top 100,

As for "photography", "lifestyle" and so on you will mostly break top 10 with your app and from my point of view, this will definetely give your app a chance.

I cant reveal exact places and communities where i promote apps, as it will devalue my service.

However, i will definetely mention minimum of 200 guaranteed purchases in paypal invoice description, so you can easily refund in case of fail.

Offer is only valid for 0.99 apps because it provides best conversion rate for purchases.

Math is not an opinion, to break into the top50/100 of any category you need much much less than $299 or $499. Fact.

Hence you are just charging naive devs that don't know their numbers yet.

It's a shame, I tried to came up with a cross-promotion platform, completely free, to really help each other, and no-one replied, then someone is charging $499 for nothing, and probably someone will fall for that, most likely.
    Officially annoyed :/

I'm not saying your idea is illegal or scammy, I think anyone with few credit cards can do that, and it costs much less, and they'll notice the service has no value. The even more annoying thing is that those people wouldn't even noticed they'd lost money. Argh.

Gonna say he didn't? Merely trying to suggest alternative ways of getting sales, that are perhaps more sustainable than simply getting into the top 200 for 10 minutes before promtly dropping back out into quagmire.

If you can promise me 200 sales for $299, I can just buy them myself? :o

I would heavily emphasise the role that social media has to play in developing a lasting relationship between customers and your brand. Maybe it will take not one, two or three different applications, but once you have an established name and a fair few people following your actions, no reason why you can't advance up the rankings. It's not a gold rush, more building solid foundations of interest and working from there.

I COMPLETELY agree with this statement. In the earlier days of the app store, getting into the top 50/100 meant something. Today it does not mean nearly as much. These promotion companies are no doubt aware of this, but charge a premium for it anyway.

I've done a similar service, paid more for it and had similar results. I was seduced by the notion of getting in the charts as well and fell off them just as
quickly. My fault for not doing enough research.

It really boils down to a very simple question...

Are the developers who have invested in this service able to make their investment back in new sales?

That is the real VALUE they are paying for, not to say they made the top 50/100 for half a day, they want to be IN the top 50/100 in order to gain traction and turn a profit.

I challenge the owner of this thread to offer this information and I strongly recommend that any developer thinking about shelling out their hard earned money, demand it of them as well as a precondition.

    Again...
Are the developers who have invested in this service able to make their investment back in new sales?

I promise you rankings - initial boost which makes your app noticed by people. Then its up to app's quality and market demand.

haha for $299 I could lower the price of my app to 99c and buy myself into the top 10, if not the top 5 of my category.

This guy is basically saying pay me $20K and I'll give you a $5K car. You'd have to be a complete moron to take the deal.

The one question in financing it yourself would be that you would need a few hundred people to buy the app. Seems like a lot of work to set up.

Anyways, being complete morons;), we are giving this a go for Dollar Origami 3D tomorrow so I guess everyone can see how it does for us.

As of right now the app is ranked at #432 in Paid Entertainment Apps in the US store. Grossing Rank is 498 -I only mention that because we do have In App Purchases. I'm interested to see how IAPs are affected also.

Here is the ranking chart on App Annie- but it won't show any ranking changes until tomorrow evening when it updates for the day.

I'll put some applyzer charts here too. I guess most are interested to see not only how far/fast an app rises, but also how far/fast it falls, so I'll update this as things go on after the promo ends.

Good luck with it, will be interested to see how it goes :) though it's more the sustainability factor that is a matter of debate rather than whether or not you are propelled up the rankings... It does seem like a trampoline effect though, you bounce up high, but with nothing to keep you there you just come down again and after a while you're in the same position you were before..

good luck. maybe i was a bit too harsh with that moron comment =)

and you're right about the few hundred people. You could gift the apps and try and get everyone to buy it on the same day. Easier said than done.

That said, top 50-100 category isn't worth the risk of possibly being involved in something shady.

The appmagenta top 25 free was at least tempting.
