Please do not post the same thing multiple times. The board software automatically flags certain posts as needing moderator attention. This happens the most often for new users. I'm pretty sure this is made clear at the time you attempt to post. Posting the same thing over and over again just makes that many more posts the moderators have to weed through later. This makes us sad. Don't make us sad. If your post/thread doesn't appear, just wait a while. Don't post it again. If it hasn't shown up by the next day, then you can try again. I normally go through posts in the mornings, and try to check a few times throughout the day, but I'm not here 24/7. There will typically be a significant delay before posts are approved. Just be patient.

  • Can an indie developer achieve...

Thanks all for your insights! I am determined to give it a try! I know it's not easy. That's why I am trying to gauge what it is like "on the average". Hopefully I would be above average. Even though it's failure it would still be a very interesting exercise.

Does Apple release any statistics like what percentage of apps receive what percentage of revenue, etc sort of things?
"On the average" isn't useful when you're talking about something a market as large and lopsided the App Store.

I'll take a stab at predicting what will happen with your first app, making a couple assumptions:

    1. It's not going to be an extremely polished or sublimely brilliant entertainment product with a lot of viral potential
    2. It's not going to be an app for a well established and researched niche market that really improves on competitive apps

Based on those assumptions, you will get a few sympathy purchases from friends and family the first week, and it will quickly drop off to 0 downloads a day the second week. You'll never accumulate the minimum sales required for a payout, so you'll never see a a single dollar for all your hours of hard work.

You will get a few more downloads if your app is free, but it won't be enough to ever see a penny from ad revenue.
